Salute to Excellence National Media Awards - Collegiate 

The National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) Salute to Excellence Awards in Collegiate Journalism recognizes exemplary coverage of people or issues in the black community. The competition is ONLY open to full-time undergraduate and graduate journalism students in print, broadcast and online. Mid-career professionals who went back to school are not eligible to enter.

Only work originally published or broadcast by student run news outlets/media organizations during the judging period of January 1, 2017 through December 31, 2017 is eligible for consideration. Entries will be disqualified if they fail to follow the rules and eligibility requirements of their designated category.

If you are applying at the collegiate level, please ensure you are submitting under the collegiate award category or your entry will be judged against professional entries.

 

Newspaper 

20-001 General News Reporting 

For excellence in a single article about a news event or issue of interest to the black community or experience.

20-002 Feature Reporting 

For excellence in a single article. Entries may be personality profiles, trend stories or human-interest story covering issues or people of interest to the black community or experience. 

20-003 Sports Reporting 

For excellence in a single article of sports news or feature story about college sports or a black collegiate sports figure.

 

Television

21-004 General TV News Reporting
For excellence in a single news story covering issues of interest to the black community or experience that broadcast on a student produced newscast. Work aired on an Internet TV station is also eligible. Each entry may not exceed a total of 10 minutes.

21-005 Television Feature Reporting 
For excellence in a single story about a feature topic of interest to the black community or experience. Subjects may include, but are not limited to, personality profiles, historical perspectives or reviews of cultural events. Each entry should not exceed 5 minutes.

21-006 Television Sports Reporting

For excellence in a single sports news or feature story devoted to a sports topic or issue of interest to the black community. Each entry should not exceed 5 minutes.

 

Radio 

22-007 Radio News Reporting

For excellence in a single article about a news event or issue of interest to the black community or experience. Each entry should not exceed 5 minutes.

22-008 Radio Feature Reporting

For excellence in a single article. Entries may be personality profiles, trend stories or human-interest story covering issues or people of interest to the black community or experience. Each entry should not exceed 5 minutes.

22-009 Radio Sports Reporting 

For excellence in a single article of sports news or feature story about college sports or a black collegiate sports figure. Each entry should not exceed 5 minutes.

 

Photography

23-010 Single Image
For excellence in a news, feature or sports event photography that is portraying the black community or experience.

23-011 Multiple Images

For excellence in photo essay or package of photographs in a news, feature or sports event that is portraying the black community or experience. Each entry should not exceed 15 photos.

 

Digital Media

24-012 Online News Reporting

For excellence in a single online news article about a news event or issue about the black community or experience. Entries must have been written for the web only.

24-013 Online Feature Reporting  
For excellence in a single online article. Entries may be personality profiles, trend story or human-interest story covering issues or people affecting the black community. Entries must have been written for the web only.

24-014 Online Sports Reporting

For excellence in a single online article of sports news or feature story about college sports or a black collegiate sports figure. Entries must have been written for the web only.

24-015 Best Use of Multimedia - Special Project

For excellence in a package or project that uses various digital storytelling, including text, audio, video and other interactive elements to inform its audience about a specific news/feature story or topic.
